Hey from Ina May ~ December 2022

Dear Friends,

Happy Solstice! Happy Chanukah! Merry Christmas! Blessings to you on Kwanzaa!

I hope you can find some joy in connecting with family and friends this season.

If this is a difficult time of the year for you, please know you’re not alone. Hang on!

I hope to reconnect with you via music and story and song in two online concerts in late January. Tentative dates are Sunday, January 22, and Tuesday, January 24. I want to do two because the weekday evening one works for the majority of my friends. But I’d like to play for people in other time zones who haven’t been able to join in. How about you? Would you be able to attend an online concert at 2 pm Eastern time on a Sunday? Would 1 pm be better?

Here’s a little gift for you. I found out recently from ASCAP that my song "Here in My Bones" from Rewrite the Ending has been played more than any other song on the album. Way more. I had no idea. It features gorgeous work by superstars Rob Mounsey on keyboards and Matt Beck on guitar. Check it out in this new lyric video: https://youtu.be/uXz8sDErpvY.

Hello my friends,

Thanks so much for all the good wishes for my show in Marblehead, MA, last month at Me&Thee Music. It was sold out! Deep thanks to all who were there. Thanks to Jeanie Stahl and Mason Daring for inviting me, and to Richard Gates on bass, and gratitude to all for sharing their heart-stirring music. Thank you, Anthony Silva, and all the volunteers at Me&Thee Music. And thanks to Cliff Garber for this photo from the show:

Hello my friends,

I’m happy to be playing a live gig at 7:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 9, in my hometown, Marblehead, Massachusetts at Me & Thee Music! I'm opening for Mason Daring and Jeanie Stahl. If you’re in the area, it would be great to see you there.

Buy tix at: https://meandthee.org/concerts/mason-daring-jeanie-stahl/

I’m especially excited to be playing at Me & Thee Music. It’s one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music venues in the United States! Read more here: https://meandthee.org/history-of-the-me-and-thee-coffeehouse/

Just found out I’ll be playing live in New York City on Saturday, October 8, at our cherished annual Songwriters’ Exchange show. It’s a lovely all afternoon show at a community garden on the Lower East Side featuring lots of songwriters from the Exchange. More details soon.

Hey from Ina May ~ August 2022

🎶 Live Concert! 🎶

Friday, September 9, 2022
• 7:30 pm •
Me & Thee Music, Marblehead, MA

Dear Friends,

Ah the duality of life!

1. From Me&Thee Music in Marblehead, Massachusetts:

"Just Added! Ina May Wool will open for Mason Daring and Jeanie Stahl on Sept. 9th as we kick off our 53rd Season! No-fee tickets & info at: meandthee.org"

This will be my first indoor in-person show since the plague slithered up on our shores lo these many months ago! Many safety protocols are in place and that makes me happy. Hope to see you - vaccinated, masked, and socially distanced - if you’re anywhere nearby. That would make me even happier.

I’ll be opening for Mason Daring and Jeanie Stahl – long-time local faves with big-time impressive credits – and I’m told the show will sell out. For more on Me&Thee Music, Mason and Jeanie, and to buy tix while they last:
https://meandthee.org

2. For reasons perhaps too boring to enumerate, I have to cancel my online show scheduled for August 9. I’m disappointed, but there will be others down the road; I’ll let you know when. “Musicians lead complicated lives,” according to The New Yorker, and I would tend to agree.

Thanks so much for reading and watching. Stay well!

Ina May

Jul '21 - ONLINE SHOW, JULY 21, 2021

Hey from Ina May, July 2021

Dear Friends,

I’m thrilled to tell you that Rewrite the Ending, my NEW RECORDING – I love saying that phrase – is close to completion. It’s so close. I wanted to keep it simple because it’s my first recording as chief decision-maker and my first foray into recording myself at home. But a few months ago I injured my finger (It’s better now thanks) as we were finishing up the tracks, and that emboldened me to seek help from some genius musicians I’ve played with and admired over the years. This is still mostly a solo effort, but there are surprising and gorgeous contributions from Kenny White on piano, Jerry Marotta on drums, David Brown on resonator and slide guitars, Matt Beck on mandolin and manouche guitar, and Rob Mounsey on keyboards and many wonderful musical ideas. GORGEOUS.

You can still help me out by buying the CD now (click here). As soon as it’s mixed and mastered I’ll send you your download or CD-plus-download with a personal thank you, probably in late summer. Wait 'til you hear it!

FYI: Speaking of musicians I’ve admired, Linda McRae has invited me to sing and play in an online show next Wednesday, July 21, at 8 pm EDT. Linda is a Canadian Folk-Roots-Americana musician I met when she started attending the Jack Hardy Songwriters’ Exchange online. A multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter, Linda is a former member of the platinum-selling group Spirit of the West. She and I will be swapping songs along with Mark Aaron James, Steph Durwin, Mya Byrne, and Derek O’Connor, all Exchange members in good standing.

May '21 - Order •Rewrite the Ending• Now!

Hey from Ina May, May 2021

Dear Friends,

I’ve been enjoying this spring more than any in memory and sharing pictures of my walks, mostly in Riverside Park, just about every day.

About two and a half years ago, I was hit by an SUV as I was crossing the street on my way to a gig, and I surely don’t take my mobility for granted these days.

ORDER NOW!

THE ASTOUNDINGLY EXCELLENT NEWS

The astoundingly excellent news is that my recording Rewrite the Ending is going well, and we plan to release it in July. Hurray for Independence! For the very first time, I’m in charge. Rewrite the Ending is a full 12-song collection, and I’m very proud of this creation.

As I was leading online songwriting workshops during the pandemic, I slowly realized that I myself had over 100 songs in various stages of completion. They were all recorded on my trusty iPhone but had never been released, the one shining exception being last Mother’s Day when the music community’s dear friend, John Platt of WFUV was kind enough to premiere the song and video about my mother (“Cigarettes and Chocolate Candy”).

WHICH SONGS?

There were songs about coming back to life (“Back in the Pool” and “Rewrite the Ending”), songs about heartbreak and resilience (“One of Us” and “Going Through the Pictures”), even a song about my post-accident healing (“Here in My Bones”). A song about the power of kindness in these times (“Time of Trouble”). A song about a little girl and Honest Abe (“Lincoln on the Streets of New York”).

Through late summer and early fall, my dear friend Carolann Solebello shepherded me through the process of winnowing down the list to eleven tunes. Carolann is an excellent singer/songwriter/rabble-rouser who long ago co-founded the group, Red Molly. She and I have been around some similar blocks, we discover more and more. Each week I worked up five or six or seven from the cache, and we met on Zoom and listened and talked and considered. Then I wrote a new one about memories, new/old friends who become family, and one improbably pristine lake in the Adirondacks ("Out Past Yesterday"). The song seemed to resonate with everyone who heard it, so we added that one to make an even twelve.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER

The incomparably wise and musical Sloan Wainwright is my co-producer, and Mark Dann, studio veteran par excellence, is doing fabulous work mixing as well as talking me through recording myself at home. (As Former Technophobe #1, this has been a hugely satisfying undertaking for me.)

THE ART PART

The wonderful cover collage you see at the top of this email was created by songwriter/visual artist Tim Robinson, a Songwriter’s Exchange buddy of mine from way back.

The multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist/artist Glen Roethel is doing fine work on graphic design.

WHO’S PLAYING ON THIS THING?

The CD is almost completely solo, me playing guitar and mandolin and singing, during lockdown, but there are a few very sweet cameos with pals from my musical past.

Kenny White, who’s an acclaimed singer/songwriter and producer himself and who works with the likes of David Crosby, Cheryl Wheeler, and Judy Collins, played some gorgeous piano.

After our early scuffling days in the Ina May Wool Band, David Brown went on to play with Billy Joel, Simon and Garfunkel, and Paul McCartney, to name a few of his well-deserved gigs. David’s added positively stellar and heartwarming guitar and dobro to a couple of tunes.

Jerry Marotta — you might know him from Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates, or Orleans — cooked up some world-class drum parts on one otherwise a cappella song.

POSITIVELY GIDDY

I love sharing photos of flowers and trees and such, but I’m positively giddy at the prospect of sharing the words and music of this project with you after such a long hiatus and with the open-hearted support of such a crew.

Naturally, I want to make sure this latest creation gets out to as much of the world as it can, and there’s something you can do to support that effort.

ORDER “REWRITE THE ENDING” NOW!

ORDER NOW!

If you could pre-order the CD, it would really help me out. You’d be part of my team and my musical community. You’d be helping me complete the project and promote it to radio. Just as soon as it’s finished, I’ll personally make sure to send you an autographed CD and/or download before it’s out in the world.

Click on this link (or your favorite black button) to pre-order the disc or download (or both). I would be extremely happy and grateful if you could pre-order and spread the word about the project to friends and family by forwarding this email.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Thank you so much for all your support over the years, and for your kind words and thoughtful comments. I appreciate your enthusiasm and your help enormously, and I can’t wait to put the finishing touches on the music and send it to you!

Thanks so much for reading this, for pre-ordering, for appreciating my pictures on FaceBook and Instagram, and for all your support and good humor. As Queen Elizabeth said recently, “We will meet again.”

Jul '20 - New Songwriting Workshops

Hey from Ina May — July 2020

Hello Friends -

My spring songwriting workshop was heartwarming and a perfect antidote to the madness. Are you having trouble focusing on new writing? Are you stuck on half-finished projects? Or have you always thought about writing a song but never started one?

I’m offering two new 4-session songwriting workshops via Zoom. Each session will be an hour and a half with a maximum of six writers. We’ll write together in class from prompts, sing for each other, listen to songs and talk about them. I’ll give gentle, constructive comments to help you go forward with your songwriting. These workshops are absorbing, diverting, and just plain fun. You’ll have a song or two at the end of the workshop.

The dates are
Saturdays, 2-3:30pm July 11, July 18, 25, and August 1
Thursdays, 7-8:30 pm July 9, 16,23, and 30.

The price is low for our sheltering-at-home era. If you register by or before this Tuesday, June 30, the price is $129. After that, if there are still openings, it’s $149. You can pay by Zelle, PayPal, or personal check. To register write to me at ina@inamaywool.com.

What participants in the spring songwriting workshop had to say:

"I found your insights on different writers really helpful - what works, why it’s interesting. I especially liked the exercise of substituting some of our own language into existing songs. That unlocked a different voice for me, and I wrote a song I never would have written otherwise. I love the song!" - Emily

"I’ve been a songwriter for years but was struggling with my process. Your free-writing exercises were invaluable, helping me relax, open up and find new ideas. I also enjoyed examining songs of the masters, like John Prine and Richard Thompson for inspiration.” — Meg

"I felt like an artist painting on canvas and watching what developed. Your workshop helped me step out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to question and organize my thoughts. I loved how, miraculously, a song emerged.” — Karen

In other news: I’m delighted that a poem of mine will be published in Waymark (a poetry magazine).*The poem is called “Skateboarder with a Death Wish”.

More news: I’m working on a video for my new song “Where Is Your Mask?” It will be on YouTube soon. For now, I would love it if you could subscribe to my YouTube channel. (It's free to subscribe.) My recent video Cigarettes and Candy already has over 500 views there. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlnboQb0kXk

Be well, be kind, take care of each other.

May '20 - My Video and Song Chosen by WVUV Host!

Great news: Just today I found out radio legend, John Platt, is featuring my video (Cigarettes and Chocolate Candy) on the New Folk Initiative site this Friday, May 8, and the song itself on his Sunday Supper show May 10 from 5-6 pm. I feel so honored! Friday all day you can watch the video here:

www.newfolk.org

(Temporarily unavailable elsewhere)This is my tribute to my late mother (pictured above), the artist Beatrice Wool, who signed her work "B. Wool." Please take a look at the video on the New Folk Initiative site. You'll be helping me out by letting them know I've got some friends.

John Platt is also playing the song Cigarettes and Chocolate Candy on his Sunday Supper Mother's Day show on WFUV which airs May 10 from 5-6 pm. John has been a great supporter of my music over the years and has helped our music community enormously. Take a look at https://www.wfuv.org to see how to listen to the show and to learn more about John's storied career. (Lots to see there including a cool interview John did with John Prine) You'll be supporting me, John Platt, and WFUV, and we are grateful!

I hope you and yours are well or getting well. Stay safe. Stay home if you can. May we all keep calm and carry on. And Happy Mother's Day.

Hello Friends -

Do you have songs you’ve started and never finished that you’d like to revisit? Are you having a hard time writing with all the madness going on out there? I’m offering a free 4-session songwriting workshop via Zoom. Each session will be an hour and a half with a maximum of six writers. We’ll do some writing together in class from prompts, sing for each other, listen to songs, and talk about them. I’ll give gentle, constructive comments to help you go forward with your songwriting. These workshops are absorbing, diverting, and just plain fun. You’ll have a song or two at the end of the workshop.

The dates are: Saturdays, May 2, 9, 16, and 30, from 2-3:30 pm, EST (We’re skipping May 23 because it’s Memorial Day weekend.)

Write back to me with any questions and to sign up.

Something else new: Staying in for twenty-three and a half hours a day has its rewards (in addition to y’know saving lives and keeping safe). I put together my first ever music video. It’s for the song, Cigarettes and Chocolate Candy, and it’s about my late mother, the artist B. Wool. I wrote it a few years back. The video features some of her glorious artwork. Here it is:

Newish: Last year I missed Spring. I still needed a walker six months after my accident and couldn’t quite get to the park yet. This year I’m making up for lost time! I'm taking lots of walks in Riverside and lots of pictures too. I hope you feel some solace from my postings of nature in New York if you can’t be near the trees yourself.

New Songs/Old Friends/Feb.13

As you might know, I got hit by an SUV on the way to a gig in October of 2018. After surgery for broken bones in my lower left leg, a couple of months in rehab, and a whole lotta PT, medical massage, and the kindness of strangers and friends, I'm ready to play and very grateful for that. Last year at this time, I couldn't walk without a walker! Now I'm delighted to invite you to a beautiful show on Thursday, February 13, in Brooklyn. My friends Carolann Solebello and Abbie Gardner will be in the round with me, and we'll each do our own songs. I've been writing this whole time and hearing Carolann and Abbie's new tunes too. They're both strong and surprising songwriters and performers and world-class human beings on top of all that. That's host Carolann on the upper left and co-host Devlin Miles upper left. This is gonna be fun! - Ina May

ONE PENNY CD SHIPPING?!

Dear Friends,

It’s been a long time! I got very sick in May and wound up in the hospital for a few days with a gastrointestinal disaster. I’m happy to report I feel fine now, and I’ve been given a sparkling clean bill of health.

Thank you so very much for all your support during this time, for your kind words, and comments and likes on social media. If you’re not my friend on Facebook, please reach out to me there at https://www.facebook.com/InaMayWool. I can still add a few more to that page before I hit the FB max. Find me on twitter @InaMayWool. Been having lots of fun with photos. See some of the pix I've taken in the past few months below my signature.

In the meantime, I’ve been cooking up a batch of songs I’m extremely excited about. My focus is on writing, and I think you’ll be surprised and pleased with the new stuff when you hear it. Astonished even? Could be.

But yesterday a friend who met me when I was 17 that I hadn’t heard from in a while wrote from far away to say her Thanksgiving celebration included going out to a movie, then having dinner with her husband while listening to my CD Crack It Open. She wrote with warm words of appreciation. Other fans and friends have been quoting my lyrics to me, mentioning older songs, talking about my albums.

Meanwhile I just found out that CD Baby is charging only one penny for shipping everything between November 30 and December 4th. It’s one cent for shipping whether you buy 1 or 100 CD’s during that time only. Artists love CD Baby because they pay us a higher percentage than other distributors. Your purchase helps support the music more.

So what the heck? The universe might be trying to tell me something.

I’m looking forward to having my new songs recorded. In the meantime, if you’d like copies of Moon Over 97th Street or Crack It Open, for yourself or to give as gifts, please go to my CD Baby page at http://www.cdbaby.com/Artist/InaMayWool. You can also purchase my collaboration with social activist Bev Grant (WOOL&GRANT) on a different CD Baby page: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/woolgrant.

I wish you the very best of health and happiness and celebration, and I promise it won’t be such a long time before my next letter. Let’s make it a music-filled holiday season!

with love,

Hey from Ina May

April Edition

Who Is Johnny Mercer and Why Should I Care Anyway?

So Very Very: Remembering Johnny Mercer

Two Shows - 2 & 7:30 pm - Mother's Day

Sunday, May 10, at Music Over Manhattan

I had vaguely heard the name Johnny Mercer, but I didn't know when I sat in with a jazz band and sang Satin Doll that I was singing Johnny Mercer's lyrics (and music by Duke Ellington). I had no idea that Come Rain or Come Shine was by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen. I didn't know the lyric for Moon River was written on the back of an envelope on the way to the airport by the very same Johnny Mercer.

His songs were so popular for so long, they've become part of our culture, and, like many others, I thought of them as of their time. I associated them with what I thought were old fashioned arrangements and maybe a bit of glitz. But when I heard the song "I'm Old Fashioned" as done by Cassandra Wilson, I could hear the bare bones of the song (music by Jerome Kern), and I loved it. I discovered more and more songs with Johnny Mercer lyrics. The more I found out about him, the more I appreciated Mercer.

He was born in Savannah, Georgia, and he grew up in the midst of Southern culture, white and black. He knew and loved the music pouring out of New York too, songs by Irving Berlin and the Gershwins and so many other great writers in the early decades of the 20th Century.

Mercer had success as a singer before his writing took off. (Hmmm. A singer/songwriter?) Then for 20 years, from the mid-1930's to the mid 1950's, his creations dominated the popular song charts. According to Oscar Hammerstein, he was "the most perfect American lyricist alive. American. Pure American." Yip Harburg called him "one of our great folk poets."

I'm thrilled to be part of So Very Very: Remembering Johnny Mercer, with a narrative by playwright Calvin Ramsey. You'll hear many surprising stories about the life of Johnny Mercer along with the songs.

You're going to love the richness of the melodies and the wit and power of the lyrics.

David Buskin will be singing along with me. Let's Pretend

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month I head out to New Jersey to spend an hour with a group who are upwards of 70, 80, and 90 years of age. We sit around a table in the card room of their residence. We talk and write and read to each other, laugh a lot, and sometimes wipe away some tears.

Sometimes we listen to music or look at pictures to get us started. This week I thought my friends might enjoy a prompt from a book called Room to Write by Bonni Goldberg. We’re always told to write what we know, she says, but how about if we start with what we know and build on it? LIke Emily Bronte who sat in a room and wrote with limited experience and unlimited imagination. Write about something you’ve never done as if you had.

What should we name it? Suggestions were called out. “Let’s Pretend” won. I set the timer for ten minutes, and we were off. Looking around I saw ten pieces of paper filling up with words and ten heads bent down over ten hands writing fast.

Ok. Time to read.

This group has been going for a year and a half, so many here have practice in free writing. At first it was hard to get the writing going. This particular prompt proved to be magic.

We started with B. She began to read a tale from the point of view of a child living on a farm in Nigeria. (In previous pieces she’d written about her own childhood on a farm Upstate during the Depression.) Her African characters were poor but always had food because they were farmers, much as in her own experience. Then the story took off as the parents die of an Ebola-like disease and the children set off to find a better life. They’re seized by a gang that tries to turn them into soldiers, and finally the eldest heads into the jungle to escape his captors, but his siblings refuse to join him. All in a 10-minute writing!

Next J., whose prose is always elegant and cogent, writes in the voice of an astronaut. “I have trained for two years for this day.” Much detail about the clothes, the weightlessness, the equipment, the thrill of seeing the Earth from so many different angles. Good, vivid writing. Especially imaginative since J. fears heights so much she won’t sit in a theater balcony!

E. writes such a realistic account of skydiving that we all ask, “Did you really go skydiving?” “No, but I wanted to, ” she says vehemently. I love the part about how she’s up in the plane and decides she doesn’t want to go through with it. But she’s already strapped to her instructor, the door is opened, and they’re tumbling down. How quiet it is! How she feels like a bird!

Other stories: A.,a children’s book author, writes about her fictional career as a doctor.

E., who in fact escaped from an Eastern European country the day before the Germans rolled in at the beginning of the Second World War, writes about flying in a hot air balloon and a helicopter over New York with characteristic grace and humor.

The final story by S. is the capper. “I am 5’8” and slender,” she begins, and everyone breaks into delighted laughter. “I enjoy shopping for clothes” - guffaws - “So yesterday I went to the mall. Good! They have size 8.” We’re now all helplessly, raucously hysterical, sharing in this, the most extreme fantasy yet. “I bring a lovely green pants suit into the fitting room and decide to try the pants on first. Oh no! They come up to my ankles -- too short!” A wry smile on her face above all 4 feet 11 inches of her.

“You know what it is about this class,” one of my writing buddies says. “You make us think.”

In the past year I’ve taught creative writing and songwriting workshops for high school age students at Riverdale Country School, for the Tribes Hill music collective in Westchester, for Feel the Music at the Lenox Senior Center in NYC, and at the 5 Star Residence in Teaneck, NJ. If you have a group that might be interested in a workshop or if you know about similar programs or groups where writing like this might fit, please drop me a line at ina.may@verizon.net.

“One of the best singer-songwriters around,” writes Thomas Staudter, long-time New York Times contributor, in an article last week in The Gazette (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) "[Her albums] offer listeners the kind of heart-stopping songs that you find on albums from Jackson Browne, Nanci Griffith and Lucy Kaplansky, three masters of the craft who know how to forge experiences, personal and otherwise, together with winning melodies and heartfelt singing to create an art that both moves and satisfies.”

WHAT'S UP FOR INA MAY

Happy Spring!

Ok, so it's pretty cold and blustery hereabouts but I have seen the crocuses and the jonquils and a few hardy fruit trees blossoming, and I do believe the season is here.

Just finished teaching a lyric-writing course at Riverdale Country School which I really enjoyed. It was part of a creative writing course in the high school there taught by the multi-talented Sarah Banks. (Sarah is also a fantastic violinist.) We listened to some classic songs and some of the kids' current favorites, and we did a lot of writing. It was fun getting to know what some highly intelligent 16-year-olds are listening to these days. (There were plenty of surprises and some very excellent new writing too.)

WOOL&GRANT had a fine foray into New England on our tour last month. Thanks so much for cheering us on.

We were also very happy to be included in the one-day NERFA showcase in New Jersey at the beginning of this month. A smile fest all around.

Coming up there are some great shows and workshops I hope you'll join in on. Check out the calendar page. I just updated it so you can see more detail there. This Friday (4/18) WOOL&GRANT is at the Two Moon Art House & Cafe in Brooklyn with Carolann Solebello and Elisa Peimer. In May I'm leading some writing workshops, and WOOL&GRANT will be featured at the 11th Annual Mamapalooza Outdoor Extravaganza at Pier 1 (70th Street) on May 18th. More on the calendar page.

Last and not least - if you'd like to get my email newsletters, please sign up http://eepurl.com/NRxw1. If you used to be on the list and didn't mean to jump off, do the same http://eepurl.com/NRxw1. I have a new mail service and they want people to confirm their interest. If you get a message that says you're already signed up, that's all to the good. They just want proof I'm not spamming. And I would love to keep you in the loop.

Thanks,

Thanks for cheering WOOL&GRANT on at John Platt's On Your Radar show on the 11th on the big stage at the Rockwood Music Hall. What a night!

Thank you too for sharing the joy of Rob Morsberger's music at the Songwriters' Beat tribute to my late friend on the 20th. I sang his Relativity Blues Waltz with Janie Barnett accompanying me beautifully on piano, and many other musical friends brought Rob's songs alive in style. We felt that he WAS alive in the room with all the love and connection and spirit of the music.

WELCOME!

Welcome to my new site! It’s been a long time coming, and though it’s not 100% complete, there’s a lot here already that I’m eager for you to see. Take a look around. The collage with me and the elephants and the moon was created by Tim Robinson. Tim’s not only a brilliant songwriter but also a well-known visual artist, and I love this piece he made for me. The photo in the collage was taken by the talented Rachel Miranda.

There are some exciting performances coming up, and the first one is Tuesday, February 11th. My new duo, WOOL&GRANT, is playing a set at John Platt's On Your Radar at the Rockwood Music Hall. Also playing: the group Darlingside and singer/songwriter, Meg Hutchinson. Lots more info on the calendar page.
